At the Paris 2024 Paralympics, 26-year-old Turkish archer Oznur Cure Girdi solidified her status as a para archery star. She shattered the compound women's world record in the ranking round, scoring over 700 points, and maintained her exceptional form throughout the elimination rounds.

Oznur clinched her first Paralympic gold medal by defeating Iran's Fatemeh Hemmati 144-141 in the final. The two archers were tied after the first end, but Cure Girdi's consistent shooting of 10s and nines allowed her to build a 2-point lead as the match progressed. By the final end, she held a 3-point advantage, ensuring the gold medal stayed firmly in her grasp.

Throughout the competition, Cure Girdi confirmed her dominance, proving to be unstoppable. "I believed in the medal already after the ranking round and my world record," she said.

After the final arrow, Cure Girdi was overcome with emotion, celebrating with tears of joy. "I believed I would reach it! And now it's around my neck! I'm so happy. I worked really hard for this. It's great!" she exclaimed.

Despite the emotional celebration, she maintained her composure during the competition's critical moments. "Actually, we worked very hard on this, too," the new Paralympic Champion noted. "We have a huge team, and we practice a lot with our psychologist. During the preparation period, we did many exercises to control my nerves, which helped me during the competition."

She added, "I tried all those things, felt the pressure during my training, and then it was easy to control it during the competition. I was used to that. I'm happy I could handle the pressure."

Iran's Fatemeh Hemmati secured the silver medal, having defeated defending champion Phoebe Paterson Pine in the semifinals. Paterson Pine narrowly missed out on a medal, losing to her teammate in a dramatic bronze medal match. British archer Jodie Grinham's remarkable journey to win bronze was met with applause and admiration, especially as she competed while 6.5 months pregnant.

Paterson Pine took the lead in the third end and maintained her advantage. Heading into her final shot, she needed a ten to secure bronze or a nine to force a tie. However, she scored an eight.

“In archery, the match isn't over until the last arrow is shot,” Grinham remarked.

Grinham delivered under pressure, shooting two 10s to secure the match.

“I knew going into the final end that I had to shoot well. I needed 10s, and thankfully, I managed to get them,” she said.

“It was tough putting pressure on Phoebe, especially since she’s my teammate. But it worked in my favor, and I walked away with bronze.”

This marked Grinham's first individual Paralympic medal. Despite being on the verge of motherhood, she confirmed her intentions to compete at the next Paralympics in Los Angeles, USA.

The competition in Paris will continue with the W1 and men's compound elimination and medal matches on Sunday.
